Another Day at Claymation/Comics Camp

We had an interesting day at our Claymation and Comic Camps yesterday, as kids in the movie section worked hard on their longer claymation movies (which have to be completed today for family) and we had two visitors to our Comic Camp — Hilary Price, whose comic Rhymes with Orange runs in about 150 newspapers, [...]

Sharing out: Claymation and Comics Summer Camp

We’re about half-way through with the four-day summer camps — one that focuses in claymation/stopmotion movies and the other that centers on comics and graphic novels. Both have been incredibly interesting and the middle school students (mostly boys) are very engaged in the work they are doing. In the movie camp, they have been working on [...]

Talking about Student Collaboration on TTT

The second webcast of Teachers Teaching Teachers that focused on chapter authors from my book, Teaching the New Writing, has been posted by Paul Allison (Thanks, Paul!). This episode had us discussing the concept of collaboration in a writing classroom that integrates technology. You can also view the very active chat room that was underway during [...]

Making Monday Music

Here is another installment of my series of webcomics about my life in music. In this one, I remember the excitement of getting my first saxophone. It was something that set me off on a lifetime of music, really, and although I don’t have that saxophone anymore, I still carry it with me in my [...]

Stopmotion, the old fashioned way

I am going to have kids work on index card flipbooks tomorrow to create stopmotion the old-fashioned way. I gave it a try this afternoon. It’s difficult to video it! Tell us about yourself!
Hi

I am a sixth grade teacher in Southampton, Massachusetts, and I am also the technology liaison for the Western Massachusetts Writing Project. That is a fancy title for someone who tries to help other teachers figure out how to integrate technology into their curriculum, usually through the lens of writing across the curriculum.

I am a writer, poet (same thing?), songwriter, saxophone-guitar player for a rock and roll band, and curious about the new tools of the Web 2.0 World.

I also have three young boys, a wife who is a school administrator and a hectic, yet fulfilling, life.

VoiceThreading It

As part of the K12 Online presentation that I created (with my good friend, Bonnie) on a collaborative movie project, we created this VoiceThread and I want to invite you all into the mix. It makes sense since this is a way to integrate voice and pictures in an interesting way. I look forward to hearing your stories in our community alphabet.

l'm a little confused. I uploaded the WAV file to podcastpeople, but when I went to listen to it, it's playing like it's on fast forward. I think I waited long enough for it to get the necessary conversion - and it doesn't have the spinning processing symbol either. However, when I downloaded the file back from the site, the MP3 file played fine from my computer. (The original WAV played fine on my computer too.) Anyway - go ahead and see if it works for you, and/or try downloading it and reposting it somewhere else?? Let me know how it turns out!

Kevin, the file worked fine for me - it opened automatically in iTunes when I clicked on it. I'm uploading to podcast people at the moment. If for some reason it doesn't work (file compatibility or whatever) I'll figure something else out. I'll let you know where to look when I get it up and running.

Kevin, I'm game for Gizmo tomorrow morning. I got it installed, so I think I'm set. I haven't done a conference call through any of these kinds of things yet, so bear with me if things don't go smoothly. :) I'll dial the number you left at 10:30? If there's something else I should know, feel free to pass it along - I'll check the ning before I call.

Kevin, I enjoyed reading/ listening to your poems -- sparked my thinking about other ways to use podcasts w/ kids. Now that you are done with the poem a day, what's next for you?
